Budget tight? 5 effective and free ways to develop your employees

Development is such a key part of an employee’s journey.  When employees feel invested in to expand their skills and capabilities, they become more engaged and also more productive.  So it’s a win win.  But it can feel a little off putting if you think all development costs money.

Here are 5 tips for effective and free ways to develop your team.

1.       Encourage Mentorship and Coaching

Pair employees with mentors or coaches within your Company that can provide guidance, support and valuable feedback.  This will not only develop the mentee but also the mentor.

2.      Set Clear Goals and Expectations

Make sure you have clear, measurable goals for each employee and communicate your expectations around their performance and development.  When someone knows what is expected of them, they will be more motivated to succeed.  I always suggest using a combination of task related, behavioural and development goals - which ensures you get a great all rounded team.

3.      Offer Stretch Assignments and Opportunities

A perfect way to develop your team is to have them work on a project or task that is slightly out with their remit or outside their comfort zone.  It makes them feel stretched, learn new skills, and demonstrate their potential.

4.      Provide Regular Feedback and Recognition

Effective feedback given on a regular basis helps employees identify and develop their areas for improvement.  Linked to this – thanking employees and celebrating their achievements is a great confidence booster.

5.      Encourage Cross-Training and Skill Sharing

A great way for individuals to develop is by utilising your internal resources.  Encourage your Finance team to share excel secrets and your Sales team to share tips on building relationships and presenting to clients.  It not only broadens everyone’s skill set but encourages collaboration and teamwork.

And remember to ask your team too.  They might have found some free resources online or have another great idea.  Make development conversations part of your culture and you’ll see a huge impact.
